Frame rails & crossmembers
How it works & how to apply it

Frame rails are the highway. A rodent that reaches the frame can travel the whole length of the vehicle under cover, then pick an entry point at leisure. Treating the rails at the points where they are reachable turns the highway into a dead end.

1·2·3 How to apply it

  1. Brush loose sand and flaked undercoating off the top and inner faces of the rail with a stiff dry brush.
  2. Lay a continuous two-inch band of gel along the top flange of each rail, where a rodent would run.
  3. Extend the band 24 inches either side of every point where something climbable meets the frame: tires, jacks, stabilizers, the hitch.
  4. Coat the crossmembers and outriggers at their junction with the main rail.

Things to consider

  • Use a four-inch mini roller on an extension handle for long straight runs; it is far faster than a brush.
  • Ramps or jack stands make this far easier than lying flat. Chock the wheels and work safely.
  • On a trailer, do not forget the tongue and the A-frame; they are a direct path from the ground.

Things to avoid

  • Do not coat brake lines, ABS sensor wiring or air-suspension lines where they need to flex or be inspected.
  • Do not apply over thick loose rust or flaking undercoating. Knock the loose material off first or the gel goes with it.
  • Do not treat only the outside face of the rail. The top surface is the one that matters.
